CDMA-EVDO in Linux

The wireless EVDO-CDMA IX Modem is now popular as it is available in some major cities in India including our Guwahati. I am using it in Guwahati(Assam). This technology is introduced by BSNL and now operating successfully.
The model is different for different cities using same technology. It is available in two type of Network, CDMA 1X and EVDO. The charges are different for each type. The first one plan provides cdma 1X network for an amount of Rs.250+Service Tax( Speed Limit 144kpbs). The second one provides EVDO ( Rev 0) high speed network and it costs Rs.750+Service Tax ( Speed Limit 2.4 mpbs). The modem can be purchased for an amount of Rs.4500 or you can hire the device for rent @Rs.200 (monthly). I am using 'AC8700' Model ( Supports both Network as per plan). The modem device is supplied by BSNL with its necessary software tool. The software attached with this device is designed for Microsoft Windows (Xp/2000/Vista) only. There are no rpm packages provided by the service provider so that it can be used in GNU Linux. I am using the device in Windows XP with the software package supplied. The device is made by 'ZTE CORPORATION'. The device is connected with my machine through a USB port.




As I am a Linux administrator and I love things worked in Linux. I tested the device connectivity in Mandriva Linux by the following command as root user.
# lsusb




Here it shows that device is connected to USB port and it also shows its Product ID (05c6:3197).

Then go to Mandriva Linux Control Center using your root password. Click on ‘Hardware’ and next on 'look at and configure the hardware' to view the list of available hardware connected to your machine. On the bottom right hand side you will view ‘Unknown/ Others’, click on that option to view your ‘Wireless EVDO-CDMA Device’. Then click on the ‘CDMA Wireless Modem/ Phone’ to view the details of the product on the left hand side. Here you will find the ‘Vendor ID’ and ‘Device ID’ like ‘0x05c6’ and ‘0x3197’ respectively. Remember both the ID so that you can configure the device.
Now create a 'Link to application(ZTE3197)' in the desktop and give the command as below.

Command : modprobe usbserial vendor=0x05c6 product=0x3197
Check the mark 'X' on ‘Is executable’, use applicable icon as per your choice and finish the process by saving the file on your desktop. You will view the icon on the desktop as ‘ZTE3197’. Double click on the file to run the command, you will be asked for the ‘root password’. Enter the root password and click ‘Ok’ to activate the device.
Now create another 'Link to application(Wifi_BSNL)' in the desktop, give the command as ‘kppp’, choose an icon for the device and save on the desktop. Now you will view the icon on the desktop. Double click on the icon to run the command ‘kppp’, the kppp program window will appear. Click on the ‘Configure’ button to configure the Modem and its authentication process.

Click on the ‘Accounts’ window and click ‘New’ to create new accounts and configure the authentication options as allowed by the service provider to you like ‘Phone no’, ‘DNS’ etc. Set the necessary options. The DNS should be 'Automatic'. Then click on the ‘Modem’ window, click on ‘New’ to create new modem device (ZTE). Set the ‘Modem name’, ‘Modem device(/dev/ttyUSB0)’ and ‘Connection Speed(921600)’ .

Now Close all sub menu associated with ‘kppp’ command window. Now enter the ‘Login ID’ and ‘Password’ and click on ‘Connect’ to connect to Internet. A small screen will give you message ‘Modem Ready’, 'Initializing modem', ‘dialing #777’ etc. The ‘#777’ is the dialing number provided by the Service Provider for that particular job. Finally you will get message like ‘logging on to network’, the process execute in a few second. If your weather is cloudy you may not connect to the Internet and the ‘kppp’ will give you message like ‘No carrier’. This does not happen with EVDO Connection generally.

Now right click on the ‘kppp’ icon on the ‘system tray’ and click on ‘Details’ to view the connection status graph.

Hi ! I just installed Mandriva One 2009 on my PC and during installation it asked me to configure my BSNL DATA CARD EVDO in the "Analog Modem" at startup and I did accordingly. It asked me to provide my ph no(#777) user ID, Password, Ip, DNS etc. I configured accordingly and it connected to internet with 'ppp 0' and I am really surprised with the speed difference. Yes, it is extremly good for BSNL EVDO Data Card. Go on installing this one today.
